How are Windows and Doors ENERGY STAR Certified?
Every ENERGY STAR window and door is independently certified to meet or exceed energy performance set by the EPA. These standards are based on National Fenestration Rating Council (NFRC) ratings and vary for different climate zones.
The NFRC is a third-party non-profit organization that supports independent testing, certification, and labeling of windows and doors to help you understand and compare energy performance. The NFRC labels provide testing performance for U-Factor, Solar Heat Gain Coefficient, Air Leakage, Visible Transmittance and Condensation.
For windows and doors, ENERGY STAR guidelines measure the U-factor and the Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC). Energy performance ratings vary for specific climate zones to deliver the best possible energy efficiency for where you live.
The U-factor is commonly described as the amount of heat transferred through a material. The lower the U-factor, the slower the rate of heat flow and the better the insulating quality. The SHGC refers to how well the product blocks heat caused by sunlight. The lower the number, the greater the product’s ability to reduce the amount of heat absorbed into the home.
How do I Know if my Window or Door is ENERGY STAR Certified?
When you purchase a new window or door ask if it meets or exceeds the ENERGY STAR guidelines for your region. Understanding the energy performance numbers will help you select the right glass package to achieve maximum results for your home.
If you’ve already purchased windows, the NFRC label shows the qualified ENERGY STAR regions for your product. You can also go to nfrc.org/certified-product-directory to look up a window’s performance.
